New Year's Day

Hatsumode

January 1st

New Year’s Day is a special day for Japanese. Many people go to shrines for Hatsumode to pray for good health in the year ahead. Drawing fortunes is one of the pleasures of Hatsumode. There is also a special New Year’s Day meal called osechi.  These meals are packed in special stacked boxes, and each ingredient has its own meaning.
